Ingrown Hair Treatment in Etobicoke & Greater Toronto

An ingrown hair occurs when a shaved or tweezed hair grows back into the skin. It can cause inflammation, pain and tiny bumps in the area where the hair was removed. Ingrown Hairs aren’t serious but they are annoying and embarrassing. Ingrown hairs are hairs that have curled around and grown back into your skin instead of rising up from it.

What Causes Ingrown Hair?

Hair type and direction of growth play a role in ingrown hairs. A curved hair follicle, which produces tightly curled hair, is believed to encourage the hair to re-enter the skin once the hair is cut and starts to grow back. Shaving creates sharp edges in this type of hair, especially if the hair is dry when shaved.

You might also get an ingrown hair if you pull your skin taut during shaving, which allows the cut hair to draw back into the skin and re-enter the skin without first growing out; Tweeze, which also can leave a hair fragment under the skin surface.

Dead skin can be a factor in ingrown hairs as well, as it can clog the hair follicle and cause the hair to grow back into the skin. To prevent this, exfoliating treatments and facials can be helpful in clearing up the skin and allowing the hair to grow out properly.

How Can Ingrown Hair Be Treated?

Ingrown hairs are common for people who have thick, coarse and curly hair. It is also common for men and women.

Ingrown hair can be found anywhere on the face and the body, especially areas that has dark thick hair.

Signs and symptoms include:

  • Small, solid, rounded bumps (papules)
  • Small, pus-filled, blister-like lesions (pustules)
  • Skin darkening (hyperpigmentation)
  • Discomfort
  • Itching

Unfortunately a lot of times the continuous shaving or improper waxing can cause more complications and worsen the condition, examples are:

  • Pseudofolliculitis barbae, also known as razor bumps
  • Bacterial infection (from scratching)
  • Skin darkening (hyperpigmentation)
  • Permanent scarring (keloids)

Laser hair removal can offer a long-term solution for the problem of ingrown hair, as the laser will detect the colored hair in the hair follicle, heat the follicle and cut off the blood supply to the hair and therefore prevent it from growing.

Although you will see an immediate relief a few weeks after your first session, long term results will require a few sessions. When the laser energy is absorbed into the hair follicle it destroys its ability to produce hair. Laser hair removal does require a series of treatments, typically at least 6-8 sessions 5-8 weeks apart depending on the area being treated.

Certain body areas as well as the face may require maintenance treatments, on average 1 to 3 times a year after completing a series just to keep the ingrown at bay.
