Laser Pigmentation Treatment
Sun Damage, Acne Scars, Age Spots – All these conditions are visible on the face and body; it’s not pleasant to look at and not fun to deal with.
Thankfully there are treatments that can reduce and eliminate pigmentation due to sun damage, scarring and age spots, one of the treatments is using the GentleMax Pro Laser System to significantly reduce the sight of pigmentation.
What Is Pigmentation?
Hyperpigmentation occurs when the skin produces more melanin, the pigment that gives skin its colour. This can make spots or patches of skin appear darker than surrounding areas. Hyperpigmentation is a common skin condition. It affects people of all skin types. Some forms of hyperpigmentation, including melasma and sun spots, are more likely to affect areas of skin that face sun exposure, including the face, arms, and legs. Pigmentation can also occur during pregnancy but can be treated after giving birth and breast feeding.
How Does It Work?
Simply put, the laser is attracted to the melanin in the skin. The melanin which absorbs the light and then is drawn to the surface of the skin without harming the surrounding tissue. Once drawn to the surface of the skin, the pigmentation will dry and eventually fall off the skin.
The Laser reduces the appearance of unwanted pigment in the skin by using light to target the pigmented area and break it up. On contact it treats the aging effects of sun damage fading the pigmentation (sun spots, age spots and freckles) in the treated areas. It is important to note that multiple treatments are required in order to achieve maximum results. Pigmentation that is older may take more treatments to eliminate completely versus newer pigmentation which may take less treatments.
Clients using lightening lotions/creams need to stop using these products at least two weeks prior to starting treatments. The technician will advise if and when the products can be used again.

Hyperpigmentation, can develop over years and is caused by various reasons which include: sun exposure, hormonal fluctuations or acne scarring. The Pigmentation Reduction treatment is utilized by the Alexandrite Laser. The Alexandrite Laser hits at a wavelength of 755nm which is suitable for clients who are skin types one to three.
Is Laser Pigmentation Treatment Painful?
Any treatment that involves a laser will have little to no discomfort. The pigmentation treatments with the GentleMax Pro is comfortable and efficient. Pulses are spread out according to the areas that need to be attended to, meaning that the pulses are only given to the area being treated versus pulsing an entire area. This makes for a more comfortable experience, and the pigmented skin is the only area being treated. The pulses are comparable to a warm rubber band snap and the sensation is quickly dulled by a cooling compress. It is very similar to laser hair removal treatments.
What Happens After The Treatment?
After the treatment, it is common that minor swelling or redness can occur in the area surrounding the pigmentation for a few hours at most post treatment. In the area that was treated, it is normal for the spots to darken in colour then dry up and shed within days after the treatment. Results are typically seen after a week and then more gradually over the course of a series of sessions.
