Below, find a list of things you should do before having a laser hair removal procedure.

Quit Plucking and Waxing

It’s tempting to keep plucking and waxing, especially when the warmer months hit, but you’ll have to give up the habit when preparing for laser hair removal. That’s because your provider must be able to find your hair roots for laser removal to work properly.

Ideally, stop plucking and waxing six weeks before your procedure. Shaving is fine, and we encourage you to do so 24 to 48 hours before your appointment. Shaving reduces the risk of painful burns.

Put Down the Bleach

Don’t bleach your hair, either. Doing so makes it difficult for your provider to target unwanted stubble. As with plucking and waxing, you should stop bleaching six weeks prior to the procedure.

Avoid Tanning and Stay Out of the Sun

It’s hard to resist the siren song of tanning beds when prepping for summer but just say no for your own sake. Tanning can increase skin sensitivity and lead to painful burns during laser hair removal.

Avoiding the sun is also one of the most important things you should do before having a laser hair removal procedure. Stay out of the sun for six weeks before your appointment. If you can’t cover the treatment area, use a high-SPF sunscreen.

Skip the Makeup, Creams, and Lotions on the Day of Treatment

When treatment day comes, ditch all creams, lotions, and makeup, as these contain chemicals that can make laser hair removal less effective.

If you use products that cause photosensitivity, such as retinol, salicylic acid, and hydroxy acid, discontinue their use for three days before the procedure.

Tell Your Provider About Any Medications

Are you taking any medications like acne treatment, birth control, or antibiotics? Be sure to tell your provider about all your medications, including prescription and over-the-counter drugs. Some can have a photosensitizing effect, increasing your risk of burns and scarring.

If you take such medications, your provider may want to reschedule your appointment until you’ve discontinued their use.

Get Ready To Ditch Your Razor

Once you’ve had laser hair removal, you’re free to say farewell to shaving. For most people, laser hair removal lasts for several months. And if you’re extra-lucky, that fuzz could stay gone for years. That means no more wasted time shaving and no more razor burn.
